Become a Billionaire with HTML

Rationale: The purpose of this activity is to view and manipulate the code behind a web page.

Procedure:
  1. Open Microsoft Word.
  2. Open Mozilla Firefox.
  3. Using Mozilla Firefox, go to the following website: The World's Billionaires
  4. Click on one of the names on the left hand side of the page.
  5. After the page loads, view the source code of the web site by clicking View on the menu bar and selecting Page Source.
  6. Press Ctrl + A to select all of the text. Press Ctrl + C to copy the text.
  7. Go back to the Word file and paste the text into the Word document.
  8. Return to the web page. Select and copy some text on the web page that you would like to change. (You will start with the name of the person you chose.)
  9. Return to your Microsoft Word code document. Run a Find command from the Edit menu. Paste the copied text from the web page in the “Find what:” box. Click “Find Next”.
  10. The text from the web page that you want to change will be highlighted in the code. Type any changes (Replace their name with your name) and be careful not to change any of the tags that are in brackets that look like this <> .
  11. Save the file as a text file (File/SaveAs and change the file type to Text Only) with an .html file extension (LastFirst.html). Make sure that you save the document into the My Documents folder!!!
  12. Return to Mozilla Firefox. Open the saved .html file by clicking File, Open File. Browse to the file’s location and select it.
  13. The file should display as a web page with a new name in the title bar (the bar at the top of the page). Notice it is not appearing as a www site.
  14. Experiment with other changes to the code to see what happens. Examples include finding and replacing occurrences of certain words or names, replacing graphics, deleting code segments, moving code segments etc.
  15. The rest of the assignment is only if you have gotten the first steps 1-14. This is not required but it really cool. The rest of the steps will tell you how to add your own picture to your newly created webpage.
  16. You will have to open back up the original webpage from the internet using Mozilla Firefox. Right click on the picture and select "Copy Image Location".
  17. Go back to Microsoft Word and paste this (Ctrl+V) into the "Find what:" box.
  18. You will then need to go back to Firefox and and browse to your picture that was taken in class. There is a set of links at the bottom of this post for your pictures. Click on your picture so that it loads the large version. Once it loads, you will need to right click and select "Copy Image Location".
  19. Go back to Microsoft Word and paste this (Ctrl+V) to replace the text that you just found in step 17.
  20. Now your picture should appear after you save the file and open it again in Firefox.

Google Earth Activity 2

Hello again,

For the second Google Earth activity, you are going to create a tour of the schools you have attended. If you do not remember the name of your school, you need to at least link to the city where it was located. You will need to create the list in reverse order. That means that you will start with Spring Creek Middle School and work your way in reverse. For an example of what your finished product will look like, click here and select open to see the one that I created. Once it opens, you will need to select the play button in the Places panel.

Here are the steps that you will follow.

Step 1 - You will need to create a new folder in the Places panel on the left of your screen. To do this, you will right click on "Temporary Places" and select Add>Folder. Name your folder "My Schools".

Step 2 - Next, you will search for your school. Type in the name of the school followed by the city and state. (For example...Spring Creek Middle School, Providence, UT)

Step 3 - Once you have located your school, zoom in so that you can see just the school grounds in your window.

Step 4 - Once you are zoomed in, right click on the new folder that you just created (My Schools) and select Add>Placemark. Do not change any of the settings in the new window, just type in the name of the school in the "Name" section.

Step 5 - You will now repeat Steps 2-4 to create Placemarks for all schools you have attended. Remember to do them in reverse order.

Step 6 - Once you have all schools placemarked, click on the "My Schools" folder and select the play button at the bottom of the Places panel. This should take you on a virtual tour of all of the schools you have attended.

Step 7 - If you have gotten this far, GREAT! You are now going to save the folder as a .KMZ file. Right click on the folder "My Schools" and select Save As...

Step 8 - Locate this file in your My Documents folder. Title it with your last name then your first name. For example, mine would be saved as ValdezCody. When you have this saved, raise your hand and I will come by and save it to my flash drive for grading.

If you have finished and you have enough time left over, you can explore whatever you would like in Google Earth.

Google Earth Day 1

Welcome class! Today's activity will require the use of Google Earth. YOU MUST FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS VERY CAREFULLY!!! READ EACH STEP IN FULL BEFORE YOU DO WHAT IT IS TELLING YOU TO DO!!! This is a two day activity. I will post the instructions for day two tomorrow. Good luck and make sure that you are working quietly. If you have any questions, please raise your hand.

Today you will be exploring Google Earth (GE) to get comfortable with its features. The first part will allow you to explore on your own, while the second part will be a short assignment. Use the help sheets that I have given you to assist you in learning the interface of GE.

Step 1 - Open Google Earth

Step 2 - Using page one of the help sheet, get familiar with all of the tools listed (#1-#16). Pay special attention to tools #1, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 12, 13, 14, and 15. You will use a variety of these tools to complete the activities.

Step 3 - Using page two, follow the instructions for one of the "Five Cool, Easy Things You Can Do in Google Earth". You will have approximately 5 minutes for this step.

Step 4 - This step is going to be your assignment that you will turn into me. Using the latitude and longitude coordinates in GE, you will identify what landmark/building is located at each set of coordinates listed on your worksheet. As you zoom into each of the landmarks, look for a purple circle icon. If you can find one, click on it. That will greatly help you in your search.
